NSG Press Release —
NorthSouth GIS has been awarded a contract to design and build an Enterprise GIS for the Port of Tacoma, Washington. The Port has been utilizing GIS since at least 2007, but as in many ports, GIS activities have been sporadic and short-lived, project-oriented, and in many cases merely byproducts of other projects and thus not utilized to their fullest capacity. The Port has recognized that the true potential of GIS as a port-wide core IT enabling technology, can only be achieved through an enterprise approach to GIS. After visiting and learning from other ports that have implemented GIS across the enterprise, the Port of Tacoma solicited a competitive bid for the evaluation of existing GIS activities at the Port, and the design and implementation of a sustainable GIS system that can withstand the challenges of time, changes in personnel, and the fluctuations in funding of technology. NorthSouth GIS has successfully implemented similar projects for other ports, including the Ports of Los Angeles, Oakland, and Stockton, and was awarded the contract that will execute from May 2013 to June 2014.
