In addition to On-Site deployments, the same software can be deployed in the cloud and be managed by NSGIS for ports that choose this option. A cloud deployment provides many of the same benefits as the On-Site deployment, but without the upfront investment and on-going management requirements.

Our In the Cloud option is known in the industry as a “managed service hosted in a secure, off-site, multi-tenant, virtualized environment”. In plain English this means that the software underpinning the system is licensed and managed by NSGIS on clients’ behalf, and while each client’s data is carefully protected and segregated, the underlying hardware is shared between multiple clients. The key term, however, is “managed”, which means that it is NSGIS that manages the system and not a port’s own IT personnel. Editing and managing the port’s data remains primarily the port’s responsibility (unless it chooses to contract NSGIS for this), but system maintenance, software upgrades, map viewer configuration, and security are managed by NSGIS.

The advantage for clients is that no up-front investment in hardware and software is needed, costs are spread out monthly and can be terminated, support is provided by NSGIS and not the port, and that the time to deploy is very short. An In the Cloud deployment utilizes its own data and access security model.

As with On-Site deployments, however, a system without content is of limited use. The recommended In the Cloud deployment consists of a bundle of software, procedures, training and data services. Startup bundles in the cloud usually costs only a fraction of the On-Site implementations, and can scale up more gradually. Scaling up can be as simple as adding more data over time, to eventually migrating an In the Cloud deployment into an On-Site deployment – the data and applications use the same format, so can be migrated with ease.
